Packing for a far away move in

Our far from home packing list covers what to ship ahead and what to buy after you land.

How fall move in worked in 2026

Student Housing scheduled move in by group: international students on Monday, August 24, transfer students on Wednesday, August 26, first year students on Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27, and continuing students from Friday, August 28 to Sunday, August 30. No one could check in on Friday afternoon, August 28, during New Student Convocation in Gersten Pavilion. Use this as a guide to how the week is organized, and check Housing's page for next year's dates.

First year students check in at Founder's Pavilion. New transfer students, and anyone assigned to McKay, check in at McKay Courtyard. Each first year student gets a randomly assigned time slot and may arrive at that time or later, never earlier. Your student needs their OneCard to check in, and a student who has not uploaded an ID photo ahead of time has to visit the OneCard Office in University Hall first. Returning students check in at their area office: North in Founder's Pavilion 108, East in Palm South, West in Leavey 6 room 209, and South in the Leavey Center, Suite J.

Early arrival is only for students who have a confirmation email from Student Housing.

Unloading and parking

On the two new student days, families parked in Lot H behind Del Rey North and South. Lots R, W, G and K were 30 minute unloading zones, and cars then moved to Lot A next to the Hannon Apartments. During continuing student move in, Lots K, O and G were the 30 minute zones, and curbside pull ups at McCarthy, Rains, Leavey and O'Malley were allowed only while parking staff were present.

What the room has, and what stays home

A standard hall room comes with two extra long twin beds (38 by 80 inches), two desks, two chairs, two chests of drawers, two bookshelves, towel racks and drapes or blinds. Your student brings bed and bath linens.

The Housing FAQ rules out microwaves, hot plates, halogen lamps, air conditioning units, candles, incense, waterbeds, weapons and other cooking appliances in the residence halls. Animals are not allowed other than those approved through Disability Support Services and fish in a tank of 20 gallons or less. Housing's partner list includes MicroFridge rentals, and rented units go back at move out. Laundry is listed at $1.25 to wash and $1.00 to dry. First year students can see their building, room and roommates as early as mid July.

Move out at the end of the year

Housing lists four steps before a student leaves: the PreMove Out Form in the Student Housing Portal, any damage claim through the Damage Responsibility form, cleaning the room (vacuum, trash out, furniture back where it started), and the Check Out Confirmation Form. Each missed step brings a minimum $100 improper move out fee.

Timing is strict. For spring 2027, Student Housing lists Wednesday, May 12 as the spring closing, and students must move out within 24 hours after their last final or by 5 p.m., whichever comes first. In spring 2026, graduating seniors had until 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, and the 2027 senior rule had not been posted when we checked. MicroFridge pickups happened on May 7 and 8 in 2026, and units have to be defrosted, cleaned and dried first.

For winter break, halls and suites close on December 18, 2026 and reopen January 9, 2027 (apartments stay open), so a student in a hall should pack what they need for about three weeks.

Storage and shipping

Families commonly ship boxes home with USPS, UPS or FedEx, or rent a self storage unit near campus for the summer. Compare pickup windows against your student's last final, since the clock to vacate starts then.
