When Your Student Stays on Campus for Thanksgiving

How to decide on the trip home, confirm housing and food, find a campus meal, and make the holiday feel warm when your student stays put.

Last verified

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. For a lot of families with a student in California or Arizona, the math on flying home for four or five days just does not work, and plenty of students quietly decide to stay put. That can be a good holiday. It goes best when you plan it the way you would plan a trip: where your student will sleep, what they will eat, who they will spend the day with, and how you will be part of it from far away.

Deciding whether to fly home

Start with the actual break, not the holiday. Schools give very different amounts of time. Cal Poly's resident calendar lists Fall Break as the whole week of Monday, November 23 to Sunday, November 29. The University of Arizona's housing dates page lists Thanksgiving Recess as November 26 to 29, Thursday to Sunday. Those are two very different trips.

Then do your own math with real numbers from your own searches:

  1. Count the hours. Add the trip to the airport, the flight, any connection, and the drive home, in both directions. If your student will spend close to a full day traveling each way on a four day break, write that down.
  2. Price the whole trip. Round trip fare, bags, rides to and from both airports, and parking. Compare it with the same trip a few weeks later.
  3. Look at what comes next. At Arizona, the same housing page shows dorms closing for winter break on December 18, less than three weeks after Thanksgiving recess ends. Some families decide one long trip home in December is worth more than two short ones.
  4. Ask your student. Final projects, a shift at work, a team practice, or simply wanting a quiet week can all tip the decision. Some students are relieved to stay.

Check that housing stays open, and whether to register

Do not assume the residence halls stay open, and do not assume they close. Policies differ by school and sometimes by building. A few examples from our schools:

San Diego State. SDSU's Housing Over the Break page lists the 2026 break as November 25 to November 29 and names which communities stay open and which do not. Huāxyacac, Maya and Olmeca, Texcoco, and University Towers are listed as closed to residents over the break. Students staying in an open community must "complete a Thanksgiving, winter and spring break form on the Housing Portal," and the page says there are no additional costs. SDSU's important dates page says communities that do not offer break housing close November 25 at 4 p.m. and reopen November 29 at noon.

Cal Poly. The break preparation page says all residential buildings will remain open during fall break, November 23 to 29. Only the Aliso desk in Poly Canyon Village stays open, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and it closes on Thursday, November 26. Other desks close at 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 21 and reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, November 30. If a student needs help while the desk is closed, the page says to reach out to the RA on call.

University of Arizona. The dates and deadlines page lists November 26 to 29 as "Thanksgiving Recess, Dorms Open."

UCLA. UCLA Residential Life's Thanksgiving page for 2025 said all on campus housing facilities, including the front desks, would be open during Thanksgiving Break. Watch for the 2026 version of that page in November.

Have your student find their own school's page now and answer three questions: Is my building open? Do I need to fill out a form, and by when? Will the front desk be staffed? The school hubs on Far From Home are a good starting point before you go to the housing office's own page.

Plan for food when the dining halls slow down

This is the part that surprises families. Halls can be open while most of the food is not.

At UCLA in 2025, the Thanksgiving page said all residential restaurants and boutiques would be closed from Thursday, November 27 through lunch on Sunday, November 30, with meal service resuming at dinner on Sunday. That was three and a half days with no campus dining.

Stanford took a different approach in 2025. Its 2025 Thanksgiving dining hours kept two dining halls, Arrillaga Family Dining Commons and Lakeside, open through the week, closed most of the rest after dinner on November 21, and served Thanksgiving Day dinner from 5 to 8 p.m.

Once your school posts its 2026 break hours, help your student plan:

  • Find out which dining spots are open each day, and which days have nothing.
  • Stock the room or apartment kitchen before the break starts with breakfast food, snacks, and a few easy meals.
  • Check nearby grocery store hours for the holiday weekend before counting on a Thursday run.
  • If you want to treat them, a restaurant gift card or a grocery delivery order for Wednesday is a kind way to say happy Thanksgiving from far away.

Look for a Thanksgiving meal the school runs

Some campuses put on a real holiday meal for students who stay. UCLA's 2025 Thanksgiving page listed a Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 27 at 7 p.m. at De Neve Plaza Room and Tipuana Multipurpose Room, with an RSVP due by November 23, plus game night, paint and sip, and cookie decorating events during the break. Stanford's 2025 dining hall dinner on the day is another example.

These events often ask students to sign up ahead of time, so encourage your student to watch their housing and student life emails in early November and RSVP as soon as a meal is announced. Going with a roommate or hallmate makes it much easier to walk in the door.

Staying safe on a quiet campus

A campus over Thanksgiving can feel empty. A few habits help.

Save the campus police non emergency number. For example, UCLA's 2025 Thanksgiving page gave UCPD's line, (310) 825-1491, for support that is not an emergency, and said RAs "will provide duty coverage at night throughout Thanksgiving break." The University of Arizona Police Department lists its non emergency line as 520-621-8273 and says to call or text 911 for any emergency. Have your student look up their own campus police number and put it in their phone.

Know who is on call. With front desks closed or on short hours, the RA on call is often the first person to contact, as Cal Poly's break page notes.

Expect locked buildings and short hours. Libraries, gyms, and academic buildings often run reduced schedules. Have your student check before walking across a dark campus to a building that turns out to be closed.

Ask about mail. Campus mail and package centers can keep different hours over the break. If you are shipping anything, have your student confirm when the package center is open so a box does not sit unclaimed for days.

Tell a friend. Ask your student to let at least one person on campus know their plans, especially if they are heading off campus for the day.

Send the care package early

Plan for packages to arrive before the holiday, not on it. The U.S. Postal Service lists Thursday, November 26 among its 2026 holidays. For Thanksgiving 2025, USPS announced that all Post Office locations would be closed and only Priority Mail Express would be delivered that day.

The private carriers also stop. UPS's 2026 holiday operations schedule lists UPS as closed on Thanksgiving Day, with limited UPS Store locations open, and open again on Friday, November 27. FedEx's 2026 holiday service schedule lists FedEx as closed on November 26 and running modified service on November 27.

Aim for a delivery date early in Thanksgiving week, and earlier still if the campus package center keeps short hours. Our guide to sending care packages to college has ideas for what to put in the box.

Be together on video

A video call on the day can carry a lot of warmth if you plan it a little:

  • Agree on a time ahead of time and mind the time zone difference.
  • Keep it short and real. Set the phone at the table during your meal, or have your student join while you cook.
  • Mail or send something they can open on camera, or cook the same dish on both ends.
  • Do not make it the only contact. A text in the morning and a call that weekend can matter just as much.

When a friend's family invites them

Often a roommate or friend from nearby will ask your student home for the holiday. That can be the best version of the day. A few etiquette points to pass along:

  • Accept or decline quickly, so the host can plan.
  • Ask what to bring, and bring something even if the answer is nothing: flowers, a dessert, or something from your home region.
  • Offer to help set the table and clean up.
  • Send a thank you note or message afterward. If you know the family, a short note from you is a lovely touch too.
  • Make sure your student knows how they are getting there and back, and has a backup plan if they need to leave early.

International students

For international students, staying over Thanksgiving is common, and schools often have programs for exactly this. In the 2025 to 2026 school year, UC San Diego's international office ran Fall Break Connection, which gave international students and scholars "the opportunity to spend some time with a local San Diego host family or community" over the break. Have your student check their own international office for something similar, and apply early.

If your student is thinking about leaving the country over the break instead, they need to plan for the return. ASU's International Students and Scholars Center explains that F-1 and J-1 students need valid travel signatures on their I-20 or DS-2019 when returning to the U.S. Cal Poly's international advising page says travel signatures can typically be issued within 2 to 3 business days. UC Irvine's International Center notes that a request sent during a break is reviewed when the office reopens. Requesting well before the break avoids that wait.

Every school is different, so your student should follow their own international office's instructions.

A note on other families

You are not the only family whose student is staying. Your school's parents Facebook group is a good place to ask what other families are doing, find out which dining halls stayed open last year, or connect students who are both on campus that week.

Thanksgiving on campus checklist

  • Decide on travel early, using your own fare and travel time math.
  • Confirm your student's building is open over the break.
  • Submit any break housing form by the school's deadline.
  • Find the 2026 break dining hours and plan for days with no campus food.
  • Stock snacks and simple meals before the break starts.
  • Look for a school run Thanksgiving meal and RSVP.
  • Save the campus police non emergency number and the RA on call contact.
  • Check package center hours over the break.
  • Ship any care package to arrive early in Thanksgiving week.
  • Set a time for the video call on the day.
  • International students: check the international office for programs and travel signature timing.
