Winter Break Hall Closing: Planning the December Trip Home

How your student's own finals, the hall closing rules and January reopening dates should shape the December flight, the packing and the mail plan.

Last verified

When your student lives in a residence hall far from home, the December trip is not only about finding a good fare. At many schools the halls close for winter break, and anything left behind stays behind a locked door until January. A little planning in October and November makes closing week calm instead of frantic, for your student and for you.

Your student's last final sets the flight date

Academic calendars list a finals period, and the last day of that period is when the whole campus is finished. Your student may be finished days earlier, and some schools expect students to leave soon after their own last exam, not on the last day of finals.

Occidental is a clear example. Its 2026 to 2027 academic calendar lists fall final exams on Dec. 3 to 4 and Dec. 7 to 10, and says student move out is "24 Hours after Last Final Exam or by Hall Closing (whichever comes first)," with residence halls closing at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. A student whose last exam is on Dec. 4 is expected out about a week before the halls close.

Arizona State's winter housing page uses the same idea for students who have been released from their spring housing: they must complete checkout "no later than 24 hours after your last Fall 2026 final exam."

Other schools set one fixed deadline for everyone. The University of Arizona's housing dates page says dorms close for winter break on Dec. 18, 2026, and "all students must vacate by 12 noon, except those living in winter break housing." San Diego State's Housing Over the Break page says communities that close over the break close Dec. 18, 2026, at 6 p.m.

Here is the order that works:

  1. Ask your student for their personal final exam schedule as soon as it is posted.
  2. Find the hall closing date and time, and any rule tied to the last final.
  3. Book the flight after the last exam, with time to pack and check out, and before the deadline.

Some schools allow a little extra time if your student asks early. Last year Santa Clara's winter break page said students could submit an extension form "based on your finals schedule or travel home," with forms due Dec. 3, 2025. For fare timing, see our guide to booking break flights home.

Quarter schools and semester schools close at different times

Quarter schools tend to finish earlier in December. From each school's 2026 to 2027 calendar:

  • UCLA: final examinations Monday to Friday, Dec. 7 to 11, with common final exams on Dec. 5 to 6, and the quarter ends Dec. 11 (UCLA Registrar).
  • UC Irvine: final examinations Dec. 5 to 11, and the quarter ends Dec. 11 (UCI Registrar).
  • UC San Diego: final exams Saturday to Saturday, Dec. 5 to 12, and the quarter ends Dec. 12 (UC San Diego calendar).

Stanford's 2026 to 2027 housing dates page says students must move out of housing by noon on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2026. Last year, Santa Clara's halls closed Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, at 9 p.m.

Semester schools often run later:

This is a pattern, not a rule. Occidental runs semesters and still closes its halls on Dec. 11. Always check your school's dates page on Far From Home and the housing office's own page before you book.

Pack as if the door will be locked

Because it will be. Stanford's 2025 winter closure page told students they "will not have card access to the building during winter break, so don't forget important items such as passports, IDs, and medications," and to take valuables such as cash and jewelry. SDSU's page gives similar advice: "We recommend that you take your ID, passport, medications and any valuable items with you."

Several schools let returning students leave belongings in the room, including SDSU and the University of Arizona. Here is what should come home anyway:

  • Medications, enough to last until the return trip. TSA's medication guidance recommends that medication "be clearly labeled to facilitate the screening process."
  • Passport and ID. TSA's REAL ID page says that since May 7, 2025, air travelers 18 and older need a REAL ID compliant license or another acceptable ID, such as a valid passport, to fly within the U.S.
  • Laptop, chargers and any device your student needs for school or work over break.
  • Valuables, including jewelry, cash and anything sentimental.
  • Anything needed in January, such as forms, a winter quarter textbook, or something they will need on the first day back.

International students who are flying home have one more item. Arizona State's International Students and Scholars Center says students on student visas need valid travel signatures on their immigration form "when returning to the U.S.," and that requests can only be submitted 120 days or less before the return travel date. Your student's own international office sets the steps and timing.

The closing checklist housing offices publish

Closing checklists look a lot alike. Stanford's 2025 list asked students to "Unplug your electronics and appliances," leaving full size refrigerators on, and to unplug a mini fridge but "leave it open with a towel at the base to prevent mildew." It also said to take all trash and recycling out, "Empty your refrigerator," and "Lock your windows and doors."

Cal Poly's page says that before leaving for an academic break, residents "should remove trash and open food, turn off lights and heaters, close and lock windows, and submit a work order for needed repairs."

Keys follow each school's own instructions. Cal Poly asks North Mountain residents to return their brass key to an Express Key Drop before leaving. Stanford's 2025 page said students not returning for winter quarter must clear the room and return the key, and that "Unreturned keys are considered lost and must be replaced." Arizona State's checkout steps for students leaving housing include returning room keys at the front desk and returning a mailbox key to its store location if your student has one.

Some schools also want paperwork. SDSU requires a break form on the Housing Portal where students "indicate your departure and return dates."

Expect someone to look in the room. Last year Stanford said it would inspect undergraduate rooms during the closure, and Cal Poly says safety and maintenance checks typically start during finals week.

Staying over winter break

Not every student goes home, and the rules for staying differ a lot:

  • Cal Poly: winter break is not included in housing contracts, and residents who stay pay a flat fee. The interest list opens in October, the application opens in November, and once it is complete "no refunds or cancellations will be made." Hall residents who stay move temporarily into Cerro Vista Apartments.
  • University of Arizona: the housing processes page says to check "yes" for winter break housing on the housing application. There is an additional charge of $300 to $400 depending on the dorm, with no extra cost in Honors Village. Students stay in designated dorms, and desk hours and services are limited.
  • SDSU: only certain communities stay open, and the page says "there are no additional costs associated with housing over the break." Students in a closed building can ask to be reassigned to one that stays open.
  • Arizona State: students who plan to stay "are to immediately communicate this with University Housing."
  • LMU: last year's winter break housing page said spots were "limited and reserved for students who have no alternative accommodations" and were not guaranteed.

If your student is an international student who will not travel, or simply plans to stay, start in October. Interest lists and priority deadlines come early, and staying usually means signing up, not just staying put.

Mail and packages over break

Once your student leaves, a package sent to campus may sit in a closed mail center or go back to the sender. Last year Stanford said packages "will not be held at the package center during winter closure" and would be returned to the sender after nine days, and asked students to update shipping addresses before leaving.

The USPS Hold Mail page describes holding your mail at your local Post Office for 3 to 30 days, requested up to 30 days ahead. Campus housing mail can work differently. USC's mail and package page says the Postal Service will not forward mail or do a change of address from or to its 90089 campus housing addresses. Ask your school's mailroom what happens to mail over break.

Ship holiday gifts to your home instead. For the Lower 48, the USPS 2026 holiday shipping page recommends sending USPS Ground Advantage by Thursday, Dec. 17, Priority Mail by Friday, Dec. 18, and Priority Mail Express by Saturday, Dec. 19, for delivery before Dec. 25. Our care package guide has more on shipping to campus during the term.

Getting to the airport at closing time

Closing day can be busy, with many students checking out and heading to the airport at once. Book a ride in advance and leave a comfortable cushion before the flight.

Look for a school run shuttle. Westmont's holiday transportation page says its shuttle "provides scheduled trips to SBA, Amtrak, SB Airbus for holiday travel," that for Christmas break "Shuttles run through the last Friday until 7 p.m.," and that the college does not provide transportation to LAX.

Watch the clock on closing day too. If the halls close at noon and the flight leaves at 9 p.m., your student needs a plan for the hours in between, with luggage in hand.

Coming back in January

Reopening dates differ just as much, and the first day of classes is not always the day halls open:

  • University of Arizona: dorms reopen for spring semester at 12 noon on Jan. 10, 2027.
  • SDSU: continuing students may return after 10 a.m. on Jan. 18, 2027, according to its important dates page.
  • Cal Poly: buildings stay closed through noon on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2027.
  • Occidental: returning students move in at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, and classes start Tuesday, Jan. 19.
  • UCLA, UC Irvine and UC San Diego: winter quarter instruction begins Monday, Jan. 4.
  • Westmont: spring classes begin Monday, Jan. 11.

Last year Stanford reopened undergraduate residences at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, two days before winter quarter began. This year its dates page lists Jan. 2, 2027, as winter quarter move in. Book the return flight to land after the halls reopen, or plan a hotel night.

Quick checklist

  • Get your student's personal final exam schedule.
  • Find the hall closing date, time and any rule tied to the last final.
  • Book the December flight for after the last exam and before closing.
  • Ask about extension forms early if the timing is tight.
  • Pack medications, passport, ID, laptop, chargers, valuables and January items.
  • International students: confirm the travel signature with the international office.
  • Follow the closing checklist: unplug, empty the fridge, take out trash, lock windows.
  • Return or keep keys exactly as housing instructs.
  • If staying, join the interest list or apply for break housing early.
  • Send gifts to home, not campus.
  • Ask the school mailroom what happens to mail over break.
  • Book the ride to the airport ahead of closing day.
  • Check the January reopening date before booking the return flight.
