Claremont 5C Health, Safety and Local Resources for Parents

Health care, counseling and Campus Safety are shared by all five Claremont colleges through The Claremont Colleges Services, so the same numbers work for a Pomona student or a Pitzer student. Mail is the exception, with a different address format at each college.

If your student is sick

Student Health Services is on the first floor of the Tranquada Student Services Center, 757 College Way, (909) 621-8222. It is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Thursday from 9 a.m.) and closes daily from noon to 1 p.m. It also closes for a month in summer, one week in August for training and over winter break. SHS does not bill insurance. An itemized receipt shows up in your student's online health portal within 48 hours, payment is due within 15 days, and after that the bill goes to your student's college.

After hours, students can use TimelyCare, free 24/7 virtual medical and mental health care for 5C students. For an after hours emergency, SHS lists Campus Safety at (909) 607-2000.

SHS keeps a list of nearby care. The closest urgent care is the Pomona Valley Health Center at Claremont Urgent Care Center, 1601 Monte Vista Ave., Suite 190, (909) 865-9977; hours vary, so call first. Above Urgent Care in Montclair is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. For emergencies, the list names Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center at 1798 N. Garey Ave. in Pomona (ER (909) 865-9600) and San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland (ER (909) 920-4747).

SHS will not share medical details with parents unless your student signs written consent, so talk about that before an emergency happens.

In an emergency call 911. For a mental health crisis call or text 988.

Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services (MCAPS) shares the Tranquada building, (909) 621-8202, open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Counseling is free for 5C students, and in summer students can call the main line and press 1 for an on call therapist.

Pharmacies

Hendricks Pharmacy is in the Village at 137 Harvard Ave., (909) 624-1611. Scripps lists a CVS at 775 E. Foothill Blvd. in Pomona, (909) 621-6708, and Pomona's family page mentions a 24 hour Walgreens in Upland.

Campus Safety

The TCCS Department of Campus Safety works around the clock from 101 S. Mills Ave. Call (909) 607-2000 or (909) 607-7233, or email dispatch@claremont.edu for something that can wait. Officers give free escorts on foot or by car at any hour. Ask your student to install the LiveSafe app and turn on push notifications for campus alerts.

Mail and packages

Use the exact format for your student's college:

  • Pomona: Student Name, Pendleton Building, 150 E. 8th St., Claremont, CA 91711. The mailroom emails students when a package arrives and is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • CMC: First and Last Name, Mailbox #, 742 Amherst Avenue, Claremont, CA 91711-6430 (Story House).
  • Harvey Mudd: Harvey Mudd College, Student Name, Box No., 340 E. Foothill Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711-3116.
  • Scripps: Student's legal name, Scripps College, 345 E 9th St. #(mailbox), Claremont, CA 91711.
  • Pitzer: we did not find a published format, so ask your student for the full address.

Groceries and banking

The Scripps family page lists Trader Joe's (475 W. Foothill), Wolfe's Market (160 W. Foothill), Sprouts, Stater Bros. and Vons in Claremont. Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank and California Bank & Trust have Claremont branches along Yale Avenue, Foothill Boulevard and Indian Hill Boulevard. For basics without leaving campus, Pomona points students to the Coop Store in the Smith Campus Center.

Care packages

Put your student's name on every box, as Pomona's mailroom asks, and include the mailbox number where the college uses one. Food arrives best in sturdy, sealed containers, since a box may sit in the mailroom until your student sees the pickup email.
