ASU Move In and Move Out Guide for Parents

Before move in day

University Housing sends each student a move in appointment and instructions by ASU email during the first week of July, and the details also show up in My ASU. A Housing Fast Pass becomes available 48 hours before move in, and your student needs both the Fast Pass and an ASU ID on arrival. Early arrival is only for students in an approved ASU sponsored program. Housing can change a room assignment, and a new room can come with a new move in date, so check My ASU again the week before you drive or fly.

On the day

Housing asks families to consolidate everything into one vehicle to keep the unloading zones clear. Label every box and bag with your student's first and last name, residence hall and room number. A student who cannot arrive at their assigned time emails University Housing from their @asu.edu account.

What the room already has

Each resident gets a bed, desk, desk chair, dresser and closet area, and the room has trash and recycling bins. Bed size depends on the hall (Twin XL, Twin or full), so confirm the room style before buying sheets. Campus has wireless internet, and each room also has an Ethernet port. A mini fridge can be no larger than 4.0 cubic feet, and a microwave no more than 700 watts.

What to leave at home

Housing's checklist bans open heating elements (toasters, hot plates, electric heaters, crock pots and Instant Pots), hoverboards and motorized scooters, candles, wax melts and other flammables, and pets. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in the halls and across campus. A small fan and a stadium approved clear bag are on the recommended list.

Over winter break

Students with an active academic year license agreement are welcome to stay for winter break. Students who plan to stay for any part of the break must tell University Housing, and Housing sends instructions by ASU email in October or November. A student leaving the halls for good in December, with an approved release, checks out within 24 hours of their last fall final.

Move out in May

The Housing FAQ tells residents to plan to check out within 24 hours after their last final exam, and says all residence halls close the weekend after spring finals. For 2026 to 27, the license agreement's academic year runs through May 8, 2027, the last day of spring finals. Last spring, students not enrolled for summer had to be out by noon on May 9, 2026. The checkout routine from that page:

• Attend the mandatory closing floor meeting.
• Schedule a checkout time with the Community Assistant at least 48 hours ahead.
• Deep clean the room, then defrost and empty the fridge 24 to 48 hours before leaving.
• Empty the mailbox, unplug everything but the fridge, lock up and return the key.

Damage charges are billed to your student's My ASU account. Bikes left behind are impounded as abandoned property during the bike sweep.

Donating, storing and shipping

Housing's Ditch the Dumpster and Donate drive collects books, hangers, storage bins, clothing, linens, household items, unexpired dry food and electronics in the weeks before move out (it started April 22 in 2026). Other routes include shipping boxes home through USPS, UPS or FedEx, or renting a self storage unit near Tempe for the summer. If your student will be back in the fall, compare the cost of storing a few boxes with the cost of flying them home as checked bags.
