UCLA Move In and Move Out Guide for Parents

Move in, fall 2026

Housing scheduled fall 2026 move in for on campus housing from Wednesday, Sept 16 to Saturday, Sept 19. Assigned move in dates and times were released in late August, and each student's unloading zone appears with the move in information in the housing portal. The meal plan starts with dinner on Sunday, Sept 20. Undergraduate University Apartments contracts began earlier, on Sunday, Sept 13.

Here is how the day works, according to Housing's move in page:

• Which entrance. If your zone is DD or Lot 11, enter campus at Gayley Avenue and Strathmore Place. For SV or Lot 7, enter at Sunset Boulevard and Westwood Plaza.
• Unloading and check in. Students get help at their assigned unloading zone, then visit a satellite check in station to have their BruinCard encoded for their room.
• Parking. Families get three hours of free long term parking. Staying longer means moving the car to a paid space.

If you ship boxes ahead, Housing asks that packages not be sent until one week before your student's scheduled move in day.

What the room includes

Each resident gets a bed, desk, desk chair and storage space. Beds are extra long twin, 36 by 80 inches, so pack XL sheets along with towels, pillows, toiletries and laundry supplies. Housing provides trash and recycling bins. A microwave and mini fridge combo can be rented through Housing, or your student can bring a personal mini fridge, limited to one per room. Housing suggests a printer may not be needed because of printing kiosks on and off campus.

What to leave at home

Housing's what to bring list bans halogen lamps, coffee makers, hot water dispensers, toasters and toaster ovens, freestanding microwaves, anything with open coils, candles and incense, electric space heaters, air conditioning units, hoverboards, waterbeds, dartboards and materials for lofting beds. Pets are not allowed, except fish in a tank of 10 gallons or less.

Move out, June 2027

Housing's room sign up page lists June 11, 2027 as the last day of on campus housing contracts, which is also the last day of spring finals. Undergraduate University Apartments contracts end June 18, 2027.

For June 2026, Housing encouraged residents to leave by noon on move out day to avoid commencement traffic, and required them to be fully out by 10:00 p.m. unless they had an approved late departure requested through the housing portal. Look for the 2027 version of the on campus move out page in spring.

Checkout is contactless, through the portal. Before leaving, students clean and vacuum, put furniture back where they found it, submit work orders for any damage, and leave a rented microfridge clean and plugged in.

Loading spaces in 2026 were free for 30 minutes at a time in Lot 11, Lot DDT, the top two levels of Lot SV and reserved spots on Gayley Avenue. The Hedrick turnaround was first come, first served.

Donations, storage and shipping

Housing is direct about this: nothing may be left behind. UCLA Sustainability's BruIN MoveOUT drive collects small, gently used dorm supplies, clothes, old electronics, small furniture such as chairs, tables and desks, and working microwaves and mini fridges at Sunset Village Plaza, De Neve, Rieber and Hedrick. In 2026 it ran Thursday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mattresses, bed frames, futons and bulky items are not accepted. Unopened, unexpired food can go to the University Apartments North lobby.

For summer storage, Housing limits which storage companies may deliver bins to or pick them up from housing facilities, so read the move out page before booking anything. Families also ship boxes home with national carriers or rent a self storage unit off campus. If your student will be in Los Angeles for a summer job or class, keeping things nearby can save shipping in both directions.
