In an emergency call 911. For a mental health crisis, the 988 Lifeline takes calls around the clock. UCLA's counseling center is Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), (310) 825-0768, with crisis counseling by phone after hours at the same number.

If your student is sick

The Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center, at 221 Westwood Plaza, offers primary care, specialty clinics, a pharmacy, lab and radiology. It is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday; and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. It is closed weekends and university holidays. The main number is (310) 825-4073, and option 2 reaches the 24/7 nurse line. Students can also use LiveHealth Online telehealth, which the Ashe Center says costs $0 for students on UC SHIP.

When the Ashe Center is closed, its after hours page points to:

  • Westwood Immediate Care, 200 Medical Plaza, Suite 440, (310) 954-0705. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Century City Immediate Care, 10250 Santa Monica Blvd, (310) 286-0122. Weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., weekends 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Emergency Department, 757 Westwood Plaza, (310) 825-2111, open around the clock.

Under UC SHIP, the same page lists a $25 copay for in network urgent care and $175 for an ER visit.

Privacy matters here. The Ashe Center's families page says that for students 18 and older, confidentiality includes not disclosing treatment information to parents or guardians. CAPS cannot even confirm a visit without your student's signed consent. CAPS does let worried parents call and talk with a clinical coordinator.

Pharmacies

  • Bruin Health Pharmacy, Ackerman Union, A Level, (310) 825-5497. Open weekdays, closed weekends. It is set up for UC SHIP; students with other insurance can fill prescriptions there but pay full price.
  • Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacy, 757 Westwood Plaza, Suite B140, (310) 206-3784. Open every day: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
  • 200 Medical Plaza Pharmacy, Floor 4, Suite 426, open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Campus police and getting around after dark

UCLA Police (UCPD) is at 601 Westwood Plaza. The non emergency number is (310) 825-1491. Community Service Officers walk students between campus buildings, nearby housing and Westwood Village from dusk until 1 a.m., 365 days a year, roughly within Sunset Boulevard, Hilgard Avenue, Wilshire Boulevard and Veteran Avenue. Your student calls (310) 794-WALK (9255) about 15 minutes before leaving. An evening van runs at (310) 825-9800.

You can get emergency notices too: text BRUINALERT to 888777 to join BruinAlert. UCLA's Bruins Safe app gathers campus safety tools in one place, and every campus parking lot and structure has emergency call links to UCPD.

Mail and packages

Every on campus resident's mail goes through the Housing Mail Center in Delta Terrace at Sunset Village, (310) 206-1767. Use your student's name as registered at UCLA and this format:

Student First and Last Name
330 De Neve Drive, [Building] Room [number]
Los Angeles, CA 90024

Housing's own example is Joe Bruin, 330 De Neve Drive, Gardenia Room 322. That format is for on campus housing; if your student lives in University Apartments, ask them for their own address.

Groceries and everyday spending

Whole Foods Market at 1050 Gayley Ave in Westwood Village is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, (310) 824-0858. On campus, the BruinCard is your student's official ID and gets them into their residence hall and other campus buildings they have access to. It can also be loaded with funds for purchases at BruinCard merchants on campus and in Westwood.

Care packages

Because all Hill mail runs through the one center at Sunset Village, use the full address format above on every box so it is matched to your student. Aim for a box to arrive during the last week of classes (fall instruction ends Dec 4) so it lands before finals begin, and pack things that survive a few days in transit and a small room with a mini fridge.
