Before you call

Once your student is in college, the federal privacy law known as FERPA means UCLA cannot release most information about them, such as grades or billing, without their consent. Students can give parents view only access to their student records. Health and counseling information is confidential too: CAPS needs your student's signed consent before it can share anything, and the Ashe Center does not disclose treatment information to parents of students 18 and older. A quick conversation in September about which permissions your student is comfortable signing can save a stressful phone call in February.
