Flying into Orange County
John Wayne Airport (SNA) is about 4 miles from UC Irvine, and the admissions office calls it the most convenient airport, roughly a 15 minute drive from campus. Rideshare pickups are on the top levels of parking structures A2 and B2, and on the upper level of the Terminal C parking structure next to ticketing.
Public transit from SNA is thin. The airport's local bus, OCTA Route 76, runs between the airport and Huntington Beach on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., so it does not head toward campus. Plan on rideshare, a taxi or a rental car.
Long Beach Airport (LGB) is about 24 miles away and LAX about 43. Either can work when fares or flight times line up better, but the drive from LAX runs through Los Angeles traffic, so build in extra time.
Coming by train
Metrolink and Amtrak both stop at the Irvine Transportation Center, but UCI Transportation says there is no direct connection from that station to campus. From the Tustin Metrolink station, OCTA Route 473 runs to UCI and Route 472 runs to North Campus during commuter rush hours only, free with a valid Metrolink pass. From the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center, OCTA Route 59 runs to UCI.
Getting your student to the airport at breaks
UCI Transportation runs a complimentary Holiday Shuttle at select breaks from the flagpoles by Aldrich Hall to SNA and the Irvine Transportation Center. Seats are limited and reservations are required, with flight details and the number of bags. Your student can reserve at 949-824-RIDE (7433) or rideshare@uci.edu. Specific dates for this year were not posted when we checked.
Parking on campus
UCI requires a valid parking permit at all times when you park on campus. Visitors can buy one at a dispenser or information kiosk, or through UCI Transportation's PARKbyPLATE system, all by major credit card. Current visitor rates from UCI Transportation:
- General hourly: $4 per hour (pay by space stalls are $5 per hour)
- General daily: $16
- Overnight: $20 for 24 hours, valid in surface lots in Zones 1 to 6 only, not in the parking structures
On weekends, a general permit is valid all day in general unassigned stalls plus "P" preferred and "AR" reserved stalls. If you are visiting for dinner, evening permits cover white stalls in the East Campus Parking Structure after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. UCI Transportation's interactive campus map shows where to buy permits. Questions go to UCI Transportation at 949-824-7275, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where families stay
UCI's accounting office keeps a list of hotels with negotiated rates. It says UCI affiliates and anyone planning to visit campus for any reason can use them, and that rates depend on availability at the time of booking. When you reserve, tell the hotel you are visiting UCI and chose it from UCI's list. All five hotels below are off campus, so plan on driving in or using a hotel shuttle where one is offered.
- Irvine, about 3 miles out. The Hyatt Regency Irvine on Jamboree Road is listed at 2.6 miles from campus, and Sonesta Irvine on Von Karman Avenue at 3 miles. UCI's list notes that Sonesta Irvine offers a complimentary shuttle to John Wayne Airport and, subject to availability, to campus.
- Irvine Spectrum. Sonesta Simply Suites on Sand Canyon Avenue offers suites with kitchens, useful for a longer stay around move in or graduation.
- Costa Mesa. UCI's list notes that the Ayres Hotel on Bristol runs a shuttle to the airport and UCI, subject to availability.
- Newport Beach. The Hyatt Regency Newport Beach at 1107 Jamboree Road is the Newport Beach option on UCI's list.
Busy weekends
Anteater Family Weekend (Nov 13 to 14, 2026) and commencement (June 11 to 14, 2027) are the two dates most likely to pin you to a specific weekend. Neither the Family Weekend page nor the commencement site listed a hotel block when we checked, so book a refundable room as soon as your student confirms the dates work, and adjust once ceremony or event times post.
