UCSB Important Dates 2026 to 27 for Parents

How the UCSB year is built

UCSB runs three quarters, each ending in a week of final exams. Here is the 2026 to 27 calendar from the General Catalog:

Fall Quarter officially opens Sept 20, and residence hall move in (Sept 18 to 20) comes a few days before the first lecture on Sept 24.

Thanksgiving is a two day holiday

The catalog lists only Thursday and Friday, Nov 26 and 27, as holidays. Ask your student about Monday to Wednesday classes before you buy tickets. Campus Housing lets residence hall students stay through Thanksgiving at no extra cost and leave their things in their rooms, which takes pressure off families who cannot make a short cross country trip work. With fall finals starting Dec 5, you may decide to skip a Thanksgiving flight and plan one longer trip home after Dec 11.

Winter and spring breaks

The catalog does not name a winter break, so think of it as the gap between the end of fall finals on Dec 11 and the start of winter instruction on Jan 4. Housing's FAQ says residence halls close by 10am on the Saturday before each break and reopen at 10am on the Sunday before instruction starts. Dining commons close too. Students who need to stay can register for break housing for a fee, and apartment residents may stay at no extra charge.

Spring break falls between winter finals (ending Mar 19) and spring instruction (starting Mar 29). Friday, Mar 26 is the Farmworkers Day holiday.

Parents & Family Weekend, Nov 6 and 7

The Office of Event Management & Protocol coordinates the weekend. The 2026 schedule page promises academic resources, tours and open houses, recreational activities and more, with events still being added. Key deadlines:

• Reduced early bird pricing applies to registrations before Thursday, Oct 15.
• Registration closes Thursday, Oct 29 at 5pm Pacific. There is no on site registration.
• Disability accommodation requests are due Oct 15 at parent@ia.ucsb.edu or (805) 893-7382.
• Cancellations cost $15, and refunds stop once registration closes.

Book your room when you register. UCSB Alumni's hotel list carries discount codes for several nearby properties. UCSB Alumni's All Gaucho Reunion, a separate event, runs Oct 15 to 18.

Commencement and the end of spring

The 2026 to 27 catalog still lists Commencement as TBA. For a sense of the pattern, UCSB's 2026 ceremonies ran June 7 to 14, with most of them on Commencement Green. Under the 2026 timeline, undergraduates reserved a spot through GOLD between Mar 30 and May 18, and each graduate received six guest tickets. Expect a similar sequence in spring 2027, and watch for the official announcement before booking.

What to double check

The Registrar's calendar pages display dates in an interactive dashboard, so the General Catalog is the easiest text version to read. Individual final exam times depend on each class, so wait for your student's schedule before booking a December, March or June flight home. Confirm exact hall closing times with Campus Housing.
