If your student is sick

Vaden Health Services is Stanford's student health center, at 866 Campus Drive. Call 650.498.2336: option 1 reaches medical services, and option 2 connects to the after hours service when Vaden is closed. TimelyCare also offers 24/7 virtual medical and mental health visits at no cost to students.

Vaden's after hours page lists where students on Cardinal Care, Stanford's student health plan, can go and what they pay:

  • Stanford Express Care, 650.736.5211, same day appointments for illness and minor injuries, $25 copay
  • Stanford Walk In Clinic, 650.497.3940, weekdays with extended hours from 3:30 to 11 p.m., $25 copay
  • Palo Alto Urgent Care Center, $50 copay. Sutter Health runs it as Sutter Urgent Care, 795 El Camino Real, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily for adults 18 and older, with walk ins welcome. Call 650.853.2958, the number on Sutter's own page (Vaden's page shows a different number)
  • Stanford Health Care's Emergency Department, open 24 hours, $100 copay

Stanford Health Care lists its adult Emergency Department at 1199 Welch Road, Palo Alto, phone 650.723.5111.

Counseling and support

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) answers 24/7 at 650.723.3785. Stanford's sexual and relationship violence hotline, 650.725.9955, is also staffed around the clock. Stanford's Get Support site gathers mental health resources at getsupport.stanford.edu/student-support.

Pharmacies

Walgreens at Vaden, inside the health center (650.815.2000), fills prescriptions from Vaden and outside prescribers and takes Cardinal Care and most other insurance. Stanford's pharmacy page also names a CVS at Town and Country Village in Palo Alto and a 24 hour Walgreens at 121 E. El Camino Real in Mountain View for late nights.

Campus police and safety

The Stanford Department of Public Safety is at 233 Bonair Siding Road, and its non emergency line is 650.329.2413. Students can download the free SafeZone app. AlertSU sends emergency notices by text, email and the Stanford Mobile app to students, faculty and staff, so ask your student to keep their phone number current in Axess. For your own updates during an incident, the Stanford Families page links to emergency.stanford.edu.

Mail and packages

Mail & Package Services asks that packages go to the Stanford Warehouse rather than the Tresidder Package Center:

Student's first and last name, then SUNet ID
8424 Central Avenue
Newark, CA 94560

Ask your student for their SUNet ID and the exact format before you ship. Regular packages are processed within 24 hours and moved to a package center or locker. Undergraduates pick up packages and letter mail at the Tresidder Package Center, 459 Lagunita Drive, open Monday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Students in the Escondido Village area use the package center at 726 Serra Street. Pickup works by tapping a Stanford ID card or Mobile ID at a reader after a pickup email arrives.

Groceries and errands

R&DE's guide for campus guests points to three shopping areas along El Camino Real: Town and Country Village at Embarcadero Road (Trader Joe's and CVS), San Antonio Center at San Antonio Road (Safeway and Trader Joe's), and Stanford Shopping Center at Quarry Road. Marguerite lines S, SE Special, X and Y reach Stanford Shopping Center, and VTA Line 22 runs down El Camino Real to San Antonio Center.

Banking

Stanford's family and guest information pages do not list campus bank branches or ATMs. If your student will want in person banking, have them check their own bank's branch and ATM finder for Palo Alto before autumn quarter.

Care packages

Every box passes through the Newark warehouse, so add a day to delivery estimates. Lockers hold items for 7 days, then the package center holds them 3 more days, and anything unclaimed after 10 days goes back to the sender. Skip mailing during the Dec 12 to Jan 2 housing closure, and choose snacks that can sit a few days without spoiling.
