SDSU Health, Safety and Local Resources for Parents

On weekdays, a sick SDSU student starts at Student Health Services in the Calpulli Center, and the nearest emergency department SDSU names is East Campus Medical Center on Alvarado Road. Mail and care packages for most residents go to one of three campus UPS Store locations, never straight to the residence hall.

If your student is sick

Student Health Services (SHS) is in the Calpulli Center, 5500 Campanile Drive. Call (619) 594-4325. The clinic is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.) and closed weekends and campus holidays.

Every enrolled student pays a health fee that covers basic SHS services. SHS is clear that emergency care, specialty care and urgent care visits are the student's financial responsibility, so make sure your student has photos of their health, dental and prescription insurance cards on their phone.

After hours: SHS's after hours page says to call (619) 594-4325 on evenings, weekends and SDSU holidays for nurse advice. The SHS parents page lists (858) 225-3105 as the after hours nurse line; if one does not connect, try the other.

Emergency room: SHS names East Campus Medical Center at UC San Diego Health, 6655 Alvarado Road, as the nearest emergency department. UC San Diego Health lists 24 hour emergency care there and posts wait times online. Main line: (619) 287-3270. We did not find an SDSU page naming a specific urgent care clinic.

Privacy: SHS can share information with you only with your student's permission. Talk with your student ahead of time about whether they want to give that permission.

Pharmacies

The SHS Pharmacy in the Calpulli Center fills prescriptions and sells over the counter medicine. The after hours page lists its number as (619) 594-5924. Off campus, the Walmart Supercenter at 3412 College Ave has a pharmacy, (619) 858-0074.

Counseling

C&PS is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at (619) 594-5220. After hours, SHS points to the San Diego Access and Crisis 24 hour line at 800-479-3339.

Campus police and alerts

The SDSU Police Department is at 5500 Campanile Drive. Its non emergency line is (619) 594-1991 (press 1). In an emergency, students can dial 911 or use any blue light duress phone on campus, and text to 911 works across San Diego County. SDSU's police site points students to the SDSU Safe app and the SDSU Alert platform for emergency notifications, and SDSU runs an emergency information line at 1-866-794-8832.

Mail and packages

Housing routes resident mail through The UPS Store, and students get an email at their SDSU address when something arrives. Address it on four lines: your student's first and last name; the street address for their area (listed below); their building and room number; and San Diego, CA 92115.

  • West Campus (Aztec Corner, Granada, Piedra del Sol, Sunset Plaza, University Towers, Viva): 5505 Hardy Ave.
  • East Campus (Maya, Olmeca, South Campus Plaza, Tenochca, Tepeyac, Tacuba, Villa Alvarado, Zura): 5187 College Ave.
  • North Campus (Chapultepec, Huāxyacac, Mixquic, Texcoco, Toltec, Zacatepec, Zapotec): 5425 55th Street

The UPS Stores do not accept mail or packages for M@College residents. All three stores are open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Groceries and banking

The Aztec Market inside the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union is open weekdays 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More Aztec Markets sit in Chapultepec, University Towers, Plaza del Sol, Cuicacalli Suites and the Charles B. Bell Jr. Pavilion, and they all take meal plans. For a bigger shop, the Walmart Supercenter on College Avenue is open daily 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Student Union's page also lists Cal Coast Credit Union among its services.

Care packages

Ship to the UPS Store address for your student's community and include the building and room number. Avoid sending food that will sit, and skip deliveries timed for the days right before the Dec. 18 or May 14 closings, when students are packing up.

Health, safety and local questions

What is my student's mailing address at SDSU?

Mail goes to the UPS Store for your student's area, not the hall: 5505 Hardy Ave. (West Campus), 5187 College Ave. (East Campus) or 5425 55th Street (North Campus), San Diego, CA 92115. Put your student's full name on the first line and their building and room number on the line after the street address. The UPS Stores do not accept mail or packages for M@College residents.
