If your student gets sick

Start with the Emmons Wellness Center, which handles both medical care and counseling. Call (323) 259-2657 or email emmons@oxy.edu. Appointments run Monday through Friday from 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm, with the clinic closed for lunch from noon to 1pm and on Wednesday from 11am to noon for a staff meeting. Walk in hours are shorter on Fridays, 1pm to 4pm only. Some visits, such as immunizations, can be booked online through the Oxy Health Portal.

When Emmons is closed, Oxy's off campus resource list points to Exer Urgent Care on Eagle Rock Blvd., about 0.9 miles from campus and open every day from 8am to 8pm. For students on the Oxy Health Plan, the list notes that Glenoaks Urgent Care in Glendale and Exer's Pasadena clinic accept it.

For emergency rooms, the same list names Adventist Health Glendale on Wilson Terrace, Huntington Hospital in Pasadena (a Level II trauma center), LA General Medical Center (Level I) and the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center on Sunset Blvd.

In an emergency call 911. For a mental health crisis call or text 988. Oxy also runs a 24/7 Confidential Mental Health Crisis Line at (323) 341-4141, and daytime counseling appointments go through Emmons.

Pharmacies

The college's list includes a CVS at 4414 York Blvd., a Walgreens at 2222 Colorado Blvd., and Glenrock Pharmacy at 2455 Colorado Blvd., which offers a student discount with an Oxy ID. The Eagle Rock Target on Colorado Blvd. has a CVS pharmacy inside, and the Vons on North Figueroa Street has one too.

Campus Safety

Oxy's Campus Safety department works around the clock out of the Facilities Management Building. The 24/7 line is (323) 259-2599, and from a campus phone students dial 9-911 for emergencies. Safety escorts are available 24/7, year round, to students and visitors; your student can call or email campussafety@oxy.edu to ask for one. The department also uses the LiveSafe app.

Students are enrolled in OxyAlert emergency notifications automatically. To get those alerts yourself, ask your student to add you through their OxyAlert sign up portal. Lost and found is held at Campus Safety for 90 days.

Mail and packages

The Postal Operations Center is on the first floor of the Johnson Student Center, with window hours Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. Reach it at (323) 259-2894 or postalcenter@oxy.edu. Address everything this way:

Student's First and Last Name 1600 Campus Rd. # (mailbox number) Los Angeles CA 90041-3314

Use your student's full first and last name, not a nickname, and include both parts of a hyphenated last name. Mail addressed to someone other than the box holder goes back to the sender. If you order something on your own card, put "C/O" plus your student's name and box number on it. Students find their mailbox number in my.oxy.edu under Tools, then Update Address and Phones.

Packages trigger an email from OxyParcelDelivery. Unclaimed packages are eventually returned, and perishable items are held for no more than five weekdays before they are thrown out. There is also a bank of Amazon Lockers along Newcomb Hall, near the Bird Road entrance.

Groceries and errands

The Vons at 7311 N Figueroa St., which is on the college resource list, is open 6am to 11pm daily. Target at 2626 Colorado Blvd. also carries groceries.

Money on campus

Students in traditional housing must carry a meal plan, which loads Meal Money onto the Oxy ID and gives a 50% discount off posted dining prices. Bengal Bucks and meal plan additions can be added through Card Services. The Campus Card Office is on the second floor of the Johnson Student Center, (323) 341-4885.

Care packages

Snacks, toiletries and anything shelf stable arrive in good shape. Given the five weekday limit on perishables, skip anything that needs a fridge unless your student knows to watch their email for the pickup notice.
